“A master of the risqué, Newton has scandalized + intrigued the world for 1/2 a century w his provocative photos of women + his ‘bad boy’ persona. Now he presents a candid portrait of himself, revealing a lifetime of adventure + providing compelling insights into the connection btw his life + work. Born 1920 in Berlin to a wealthy Jewish family, Newton was overprotected w 0 interest in school. At 12 he purchased his 1st camera, beginning a fascination w photography that would eventually propel him to international celebrity. Barely 18 when Kristallnacht tore Germany apart, Newton managed to escape the Nazis. He never made it to his intended destination (China). After a series of shipboard romances, Newton arrived in Singapore. But the world was @ war + talk of interning German Jews became prevalent even in Singapore, so he decamped again + spent 5 years in the AU army. Then he opened his 1st studio in Melbourne + married. In the 1950s he moved to Paris…”
