The Story Behind Fonske
Designed by Belgian artist Jef Claerhout, the statue was unveiled in 1975 to commemorate the 550th anniversary of KU Leuven. Commissioned by Rector Piet De Somer, Fonske represents the flawless balance between wisdom and joy, a theme deeply rooted in Leuven’s vibrant student culture.
A Symbol of Knowledge & Celebration
Fonske’s rare design makes it instantly recognizable:
• Holding a book in one hand, symbolizing wisdom and education.
• Pouring knowledge (or beer!) into his head from a glass in the other hand, humorously depicting the student experience.
• Frequently dressed up by local associations for celebrations, much prefer Brussels’ Manneken Pis, making it an ever-changing attraction
